I am in Moscow right now, living at the American Embassy, as
a guest of Bill. On the 25th,
I ran in Vlora after we spent a few days in the south of Albania. The weather and the water were
fantastic! My right shoulder has become
increasingly sore—to the point where I have trouble putting on my shirt. I think it is getting better, though. While I was able to be in the sea, I
stubbornly continued to swim several times a day—thus prolonging and
exacerbating the soreness.
My latest difficulty is with my
feet. On Saturday, before we left Albania,
I wore a pair of thinish sneakers. Because they don’t have a full bottom, and
small support for my arch, they are not good shoes for me. Maxim asked me what
was wrong with my foot. Then a friend
who is a physical therapist also commented that my feet looked funny.
I think my feet have had problems for a long time. Some 15 years ago, a doctor in Sac City told me that I ought to have shoe inserts that support my arch. He had made such inserts for my dad and for my brother. I’m sure he saw me as a ripe target. Whatever his motivation, I the inserts really helped. I was afraid that I would lose them. I haven’t because I wear them all the time with every pair of shoes. I told my physical therapist friend that I have inserts, and she said, “Well, that’s okay then.” The inserts help me—they take away the pain.

Some have said that I have pronated
feet. The arch of foot is quite
low. I used to hear that people got out
of the army draft because they had flat feet.
I guess I wouldn’t be chosen. Although, Dad was in the army, and he
apparently has the same problem. My foot
is turned in so far that It’s almost like I am walking on the bottoms of my
bone instead of my foot. Therefore, I am
trying to walk and run on the outside of my feet. It’s working to a certain degree. I am trying to find a foot doctor in Des
Moines.
