            Yesterday evening after classes, my one American colleague and I made a pumpkin pie.  We’ve been planning it since last Thanksgiving when I didn’t have any holiday food.  It turned out amazingly well.  Delicious, and 100% Thanksgiving-ish.  There is a chain of medium-sized grocery stores here called The Big Market.  I was able to find all the spices I needed there—including nutmeg that is sold in a small plastic bag with half a dozen hard balls and a finger-sized metal scraper. Very cool.

            These days are days full of rest.  The one day earmarked for rest was the 18th, a Sunday.  On the 20th, I gingerly ran the uphill ‘sprint’ at the beginning of the run.  All throughout these days, I have felt a pull on my left hamstring that I don’t want to exacerbate.  One might notice on the pull-ups that I did 17 and 15 rather than two sets of 15.  This, because my arms are feeling quite energetic and full of life.

Yesterday, the 17th, I finished the long downhill just .05 seconds slower than my all-time record from October of last year.  I wasn’t expecting such a result.  When I began the run, I was feeling groggy and uninspired.  I ran the uphill quite slowly, finishing in 1:07—I’ve done 1:03 in the past.  I finished with a respectable 19.85 for the 5 flights, .06 seconds off the record pace.

            On Thursday, the eighth, I ran the usual route.  I started later than usual.  I broke the record for the 4 flight sprint up the steps to my apartment—though just two days before, I broke 20 seconds for the first time.

            Wahoo!!!   I broke the 20-second mark for the four flights up to my apartment. It was a perfect storm today as my legs were doing well, I didn’t have anything in my arms, and I left my iPhone in my pocket. Therefore, there was absolute freedom of hand movement.  I didn’t pass anyone on the steps, so my concentration was firmly on pumping the legs and throwing the arms with enthusiasm.

              These two runs were completed in somewhat colder weather, but I will not dwell on this fact.  The locations of everyone else who might be reading this blog seem to be much colder.  Suffice it to say that yesterday, I wore a couple socks on my hands (that worked out nicely), and today I wore a pair of hand knitted mittens (they ended up in my pocket because they were too warm).
