NEW RECORD AT -4 F!
Words 310
It’s thrilling to look at the watch and see all those zeros, as in 1 minute, 00 seconds. About 15 meters before the end, I needed to fiddle with my sleeve—I’m sure that added a couple tenths to my time. We haven’t had any new snow in several days, and DURING the day, the bright, clear sun warms things up to nearly -15 C so the pavement is 95% snow and ice free—great traction. I have to find a new word for ‘amazed.’ Some months ago, I was happy to run this distance in 1:05.
I try to imagine someone who might be timing me with a stop watch. They might know that my goal is to break 1 minute. At 55 seconds, I wonder how far I am from the finish. And at 58 seconds, they might still think I have a chance. Even when they stop the watch, it wouldn’t be clear if I made the goal or not because the final result was less than a second above.
I did several sprints in the middle of the run today. I will have to cut down my attire to one t-shirt because Ira pointed out that I sweat through both. I try to run without sweating in the winter. After finishing, I walk back down the median TOWARD the sun. The sunrise was stunning with red, pink, peach, orange, all mixed in exquisite proportions. Ira pointed it out and of course all I could say was, “Yes, but wouldn’t it be nice of those buildings weren’t there? We need to find a countryside.”
Today’s result makes me think that a sub-minute time is surely possible. But I am also not looking forward to trying for it. The run today was terribly tough. My lungs were screaming, my neck was strained, everything was stretched to the limit.
